PORT AUX BASQUES – Construction has finally begun on the affordable housing project for seniors on Army Hill, at the site where the old Bruce Arena once stood.
The province is facing a housing crisis and many seniors are in dire financial straits, making this project a much needed one for the region. The project has been in development since 2018, and the first stages of building began on Oct 13 when equipment began clearing the site, ripping up the old concrete and rebar that remained for decades after a fire consumed the arena.
The project is being undertaken by the non-profit organization, Gateway Village Corporation. The completed facility will provide rental units to households with a maximum income of $32,500.00.
“The Gateway Village Corporation currently has the demolition of the old concrete foundation scheduled for removal. When that is completed, excavation will begin for installation and extension of water/sewer services to the property,” stated Leon MacIsaac, Town Manager.
MacIsaac explained that building the facility will begin after this initial step but a final completion date remains unknown.
“The construction of the units will start once that is completed. The weather will play a factor in what can be completed prior to the winter season and timelines for completion. It is expected to be a 12 month schedule to complete all components of the development.”
