PORT AUX BASQUES – A free beach barbecue that was scheduled to for Thursday, Aug. 12 on Grand Bay West beach was postponed due to the poor weather. Instead the barbecue was held on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 17.

“There was rain and fog for a week last week. So we were all ready to go, but we had to postpone it until today,” said Danielle Neil, Director of Rec House Community Youth Network

The event was hosted by two local organizations: the Rec House and CBDC Youth Ventures. The Rec House is a based in Port aux Basques and serves as a youth center open to those aged 12 to 18. The CBDC Youth Ventures Program looks to empower students aged 12 to 29 to kickstart young entrepreneurs.

“(We are) Just giving away some prizes now but after this we will have a little campfire with some s’mores hopefully, depending on the weather and the wind and stuff,” said Neil.

The celebration was held to mark International Youth Day, a day created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 and recognized globally each year on August 12.

“We just did this to celebrate youth across the province. And obviously since COVID and being stuck inside, it’s a great thing to get outside and celebrate some young people,” said Neil.

“Young people are on the frontlines of the struggle to build a better future for all. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the dire need for the kind of transformational change they seek – and young people must be full partners in that effort,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

For International Youth Day 2021, the theme centered on transforming food systems, which highlights the need for youth to be involved in the global effort to lead a healthier lifestyle. The pandemic highlighted the need for youth to stay active while at the same time being able to make informed decisions about food choices.

It is through youth involvement in entrepreneurial solutions that the UN hopes to move towards a healthier lifestyle for the planet.
