PORT AUX BASQUES — For those looking to get their kids involved in summer fun, they need look no further than the Bruce II Sports Centre. The seven-week camp for kids began on Monday, July 12, with attendance lasting a week, and the spots for the remaining weeks are quickly filling up according to Megan Scott, Summer Recreation Co-ordinator.

“We are on our second day, and it’s going really well. Right now, we’re not at capacity, we’re at about half capacity for this week,” said Scott.

Currently there are 10 children, with a capacity of 16 total, and new groups are coming in each week. Scott also said that when children are signed up for one week, they still have the option of continuing in subsequent weeks, assuming capacity allows.

Children must be seven years old and one week will cost parents $125. Paper work must be filled out and brought to the Bruce II before the child can attend that program.

“When they come up to pay for the week they can sign the paperwork then, or they can bring it up with them the morning their kid first starts, just so then we have the information we need throughout the week,” explained Scott.

Each day involves a variety of activities to keep the kids entertained and active.

“The kids have been enjoying daily swimming and daily bowling. Along with daily arts and crafts, other activities, and being able to go outside and utilize the playground when it’s nice,” said Scott.

The activities will not include field-trips that would require travelling by bus, since due to the pandemic the camp’s activities will be centred around the Bruce II.

The Bruce II will also have plenty to offer for adults, with some of the pandemic restrictions being lifted for the fitness centred.

“You no longer have to call up and book a slot. We have half-an-hour slots from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday and Saturdays, and until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. There are also some open swims too,” said Scott.
